The Jade Exchange

I am writing from a correctional institution, where I am on remand awaiting trial. I’m being charged with “trafficking in dangerous drugs”.

Allow me to share my story.

My accomplice and I were acquainted through an online recruitment ad. We were assigned to travel to Brazil and Kuala Lumpur respectively. Our recruiter first asked my accomplice to pick up a package of jade from Brazil and then travel back to Hong Kong.

My flight from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong was arranged to arrive at precisely the same time as my accomplice’s flight from Brazil. Upon landing, we were to meet at a specified female washroom where I would be handed over the package with jade to go through Customs.

While going through Customs I was asked for an inspection. That’s when I realized that there was no “jade” at all.  I only found out afterward that there were 2.5kg of cocaine inside the package. I was shocked! I couldn’t believe what was happening to me. I am devastated. My parents would like to hire a lawyer to take back my statement from the police and get legal advice. However, due to our financial situation, we don’t have enough money to do so. Frankly speaking, I’m worried that even after my parents spend their pension money on it, we still wouldn’t be able to find a good lawyer to help me. I hope a good lawyer can prove my innocence. I’m only 20 years old, and I don’t want to spend my youth in a cell. I have a full-time job outside. I’m an only child, and my parents need my financial support. My dad will be retiring in a few years, and I do hope to be able to take care of them and lessen their financial burden.
